Nicki Washington (Computer Science) discusses the start and evolution of the impactful Cultural Competence in Computing (3C) Fellows program over the last year. The 3C program has its roots in Washington’s research, which is focused on identity and broadening participation in computing. As Director, Washington worked together with Shaundra Daily (Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and graduate student Cecilé Sadler to build a program that centered the perspective and expertise of Black women. The program focuses on understanding identity, and applying those insights to the field of computer science education—including sessions on mentoring students, faculty hiring and retention and teaching contentious issues.
